Footballer Chan Wai Ho on Dreams and Frustrations

Former caption of the Hong Kong national football team Chan Wai Ho has served various local leagues including Hong Kong Rangers FC, South China Football Team, and Hong Kong Pegasus FC. In 2009, he led the Hong Kong team to a historic victory over the Japanese team in the East Asian Games men’s football competition, securing the first-ever championship for Hong Kong in a major tournament.

Chan’s passion for football started on the soccer pitches in his neighborhood in Ngau Tau Kok, where people from all walks of life mingle and practice together. The dream of becoming a professional footballer has motivated him to work harder than the others. Every morning, he woke up thinking about how to improve his skills and become a better player. Despite the necessary sacrifice of the time for entertainment and rest comparing to his peers, he has developed strong internal motivation and strength that helped him to deal with all kinds of challenges not only on the field, but also in his future career.

Speaking about setbacks in his career, Chan emphasized the importance to stay calm and focused, and to taking victory and defeat in stride. It enabled him to concentrate on his football skills, ultimately leading to improvement.

He reminded himself to do the simplest things and strive for self-improvement. By doing so, he gradually built up his confidence.
