Artist UUendy Lau Redefines Tsuen Wan’s Textile Memory Through Speculative Visual Archive

Is a 23-meter-wide public art installation currently exhibited at The Park on the rooftop of The Mills, Tsuen Wan. Curated by In Time Of, the project brings to &#8220;Memory in Spring&#8221; a story written by Chan Wai for The Mills. Through a combination of painting and weaving, visual artist UUendy Lau and the Breakthrough Arts Studio collective depict the story of a female garment worker and the city she helped build.

In Time of History – “Manhole Covers Exhibition”
While walking along the main streets and alleys, people rarely pay attention to the humble manhole covers under their feet. But in fact, they are an indispensable part of the city’s public facilities and infrastructures. They serve as entry points for workers to conduct underground inspections of vital utilities and ensure that we all enjoy reliable water, gas, and electricity supplies as well as the broadband networks which all help to maintain our comfortable lives. The covers also act as openings for an advanced urban drainage system that protects residents against flooding under extreme weather conditions. They have also had a long historical development in Hong Kong. Their unique and evolving designs, materials, and production technology illustrate the century-old development of the city’s pig iron casting industry and the evolution of public works.
“In Time Of” has partnered with The Conservancy Association Centre for Heritage (CACHe) to present the “Manhole Covers Exhibition” at Nan Fung Place, Sheung Wan. The unique exhibition showcases a selection of the city’s manhole covers to encourage the public to discover the history and industrial story of Hong Kong from one of the most common, yet rarely examined, aspects of the urban landscape.

Building a village within a mall? 】
Since 2021, In Time Of has been working with different community groups and individuals to explore various possibilities in living a sustainable life through workshops, exhibitions, theatres, community walks, community maps and other creative efforts. Our collaboration demonstrates ways to stay curious and care for the world in an increasingly complex and ever-changing era.
In 2024, with ”Repair“ as our annual theme, we are collaborating with our partners to establish “Good Date Village”, building a close-knit community for like-minded people to come together to learn, support each other, and realise their full potential. Each village shapes its own festivals, culture, style, and villagers in response to the characteristics of different communities.

The &#8220;Co-learning Squad&#8221; was established in 2023. We invite various local community units (such as social welfare organizations, schools, art groups, and ecological organizations) to become partner units, working together to organize and host activities in the &#8220;group learning mode&#8221;, actively attempting to implement the mission of the &#8220;In Time of&#8221;: &#8220;Starting with the smallest aspects of daily life to make changes and embrace the concept of coexisting with the world&#8221;.<span data-ccp-props="{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}"> 
Each year-round project takes &#8220;Living in Coexistence&#8221; as the theme, exploring different aspects of relationships &#8212; &#8221; ___:___ &#8220;. Coexistence encompasses a wide range of interfaces, such as &#8220;Self: World/Earth/Universe&#8220;, to relationships touching on aspects of &#8220;Individual: Community/Nature/Other People&#8220;, to focusing on &#8220;Self (inner true self): Self (externally portrayed self)&#8221;. How have you been lately? 
The ultimate goal of the project is not forcing participants to choose &#8220;I must become a coexistent human&#8221;, but rather to take a small step towards their own curiosity during the learning process, engaging in &#8220;discovery&#8221; and making choices:
What kind of feelings and thoughts do I have during such a &#8220;relationship&#8221; state? Hoping the participants would have a better self-understanding and be willing to attempt to face and accept themselves. Discovering and recognizing &#8220;I have such thoughts and choices&#8221; is a key exploration point in this &#8220;Co-learning Squad&#8221; journey. 
&#8220;self: me&#8221; represents the coexistence relationship status within yourself, which is one of the most important co-learning aspects throughout this project. <h6 style="text-align: center;">Let’s Dine and Unwind in a Unique Emotional Feast!</h6>
We often misunderstand emotions, viewing negative feelings like anger, sadness, and frustration as &#8220;problems&#8221; ❌; while positive emotions like happiness and excitement are celebrated as &#8220;good&#8221; ✅. But let’s face it—how can we expect to be happy all the time when life throws us curveballs? Instead of pushing away negative emotions or forcing ourselves to stay upbeat, why not embrace the idea of  “stay calm”.
Curated by In Time Of Team, the &#8220;Emo House&#8221; offers special “menus” designed for different emotional states. The goal is to encourage everyone to tell themselves, when emotions fluctuate: “No matter what happens, stay calm!”
<h6>What’s on the emotional menu?</h6>
Emo House features several “emotional menus” created jointly by In Time Of and the HK Association of Art Therapists. Each menu targets a specific emotional category and offers corresponding therapeutic activities. Visitors are invited to “taste” these experiences and even “take away” a few emotional first-aid tips to use anytime they need them.

Caring for the physical and mental wellness of urbanites is the annual theme of In Time Of 2023’s programme “Sports Date”.
