In the “Co-Learning Squad” workshops, we take “Living in Coexistence” as the theme and design co-learning activities by drawing on knowledge and ways of thinking from different disciplines (Visual Arts, Geography/Integrated Humanities, and Citizenship and Social Development). Students work in small groups to conduct field investigations — for example, identifying Coexistent or coexistence-challenging situations in local community waterways or everyday communal living spaces — then engage in in-depth discussions and hands-on experiences to embody the spirit of mutual aid and co-creation through pooling ideas and efforts among students and mentors.
At the same time, artistic creation becomes a language for exploration, documentation, and expression (a medium for revisiting in the future), enabling participants to exchange and share their visions for living in coexistence.
1/ Encourage students to use field studies and street interviews, everyday observational data collection, group discussions, and creative activities to discover and reflect on the state of their relationships with the people and things around them. In doing so, they develop a preliminary understanding of “Living in Coexistence”: What kinds of “coexistence/non-coexistence” situations or scenarios in their daily lives are most deeply felt? What are their thoughts on these? They then attempt to express these ideas concretely through creative work. Throughout the process, students can also learn and fulfil SBA (public examination DSE) requirements in alignment with the school’s curriculum needs.
2/ Encourage students to get to know themselves more deeply (their interests, ways of observing, abilities, and temperament etc), to accept and to appreciate themselves, thus to try to improve their own self-confidence.
3/ Through neighbourhood field-study activities, we hope to assist students to sharpen their observation of their own community, Hong Kong, and even the world, thus to connect these observations into their own circle of life experiences, hoping to build a sense of social awareness to “social happenings” — it matters to me!
4/ Provide opportunities for students and instructors from different fields to collaborate, to exchange knowledge, further experiencing coexistence on such learning platform — pooling of collective wisdom and effort entail.
5/ Provide opportunities for schools—teachers and students—to experience how cross-disciplinary collaborative learning/project-based learning operates, with the hope that it can serve as a reference for if the school would like to explore school-based curriculum design.
6/ Encourage students to build up a habit of self-reflection, through keeping daily records (like journals) of their lives in diverse forms of creation, thus facilitating a consistent self-review, and planning.
